Thought of Charlie when our new neighbors bought mom’s old house. Their dog’s name is Peter Pan. When we asked the 10-year-old about that she said it was because he looked like peanut butter… and she was five when she named him!
@catthegreat@chienfou I love these names! When I was about 3 or 4 I had a dog named Sam. Named her after the beautician that cut my grandma and my hair. I absolutely adored her and felt it was the highest compliment to name my dog after her!

Sorry for your loss. As impractical as it would have been in reality, I’m sure he would have made a great travel companion for your current adventures.
@kittykat9180 he’s beautiful. And I feel you. We had a Newfoundland/malamut cross named Steve. He looked similar to Basileus. He was just a giant goofy dude. He would dig tunnels with the kids in the yard, give them rides and use the iris bulbs around the pond as dog toys. He was a mess, but he was amazing. He was about 120 lbs at a year. Love seeing the big dogs. I just wish they had a longer life span.

Basil was 105, so not quite as big. He was Anatolian x German Shepherd.
He wasn’t much for toys or chew treats. I always said he was a cat stuck in a dog‘s body.
He was the goodest boy.
@tricityladytn perhaps the philosophy of dogs is, you don’t have a dog, a dog has you. I don’t technically have a dog but I am loved by many dogs; my neighbor’s dog, my friend’s dog, my brother’s dog, and now I have a granddog who comes to stay with us.
I don’t have a full time dog but my grand dog comes to visit often and sometimes she does sleepovers. She’s a Great Pyrenees and her name is Raisin. My 3 yr old grandson named her. Soooo sweet! (Both of them)
My dachshund loves everyone, and he has a leash wrap that says “Please Pet Me, I’m a Lover” , my Pomeranian is very timid and pulls as far away from everyone the dachshund is running up and saying hi to.

Breeds at Mount Vernon included Briards, Dalmatians, English foxhounds, French hounds, Greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds, mastiffs, Newfoundlands, pointers, spaniels and terriers.
Washington often gave his dogs names, too. Some of note: Sweet Lips, Venus, Trulove, Taster, Tippler, Drunkard and Madame Moose.
According to Thompson, many of the dog names seem to relate to singing or music: Droner, Hearkwell, Music and Singer, for example.
“Each foxhound had a distinctive voice, which was important as a way to tell one dog from another when hunters were following behind them after prey animals,” she says. “Sweet Lips may have gotten her name because Washington liked the sound of her voice as she was hunting.”

So far, the only thing he does not love is my cat. I’ve only had him a couple months though. Maybe eventually they’ll like each other.

He passed almost 5 years ago at the age of 6 after a splenectomy and a rapid decline.
